Japanese candles (Warosoku)

Warosoku is made from vegetable wax, mainly from the Haze (櫨) tree, unlike Western candles which are usually made from petroleum called paraffin.

Warosoku wicks are usually made from Washi paper, papyrus, cotton, etc. The candle wick is hollow all the way to the tip and air is continuously supplied while burning, creating a steady flame and good wind resistance.

In Japan, Warosoku is commonly used in Buddhist ceremonies, tea ceremonies, and memorial services. Candle decorated with flower-shaped (E-rosoku) are also used instead of flowers to offer at Buddhist altars.
